Colchester Castle

Constructed over the massive vaults of the ruined Temple of Claudius, Colchester Castle represents the largest Norman Keep in Europe. Measuring some 152ft x 112ft (46 x 34m) and built largely from stone and brick quarried from the old Roman town of Colchester, the castle is believed to be the work of Gundulph, Bishop of Rochester. Gundulph was responsible for the design of the White Tower (the central Keep of the Tower of London) which is the only building in Britain with the same ground plan.

Colchester Hollytrees Museum

In this vibrant museum, history is delivered with humour and fun in mind, making it an ideal venue for families. One room is dedicated to childhood and is like a large playroom, with snakes and ladders incorporated into the floor, a crawling tunnel, 'time out' area for toddlers, and exciting displays celebrating Colchester’s famous nursery rhymes, Old King Cole and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Colchester Natural History Museum

Housed in the unique setting of the former All Saints Church in 1957, the Museum focuses on the rich natural heritage of north-east Essex. Colchester Tymperleys Clock Museum

Tymperleys now houses part of the famous Bernard Mason Collection, one of the largest collections of
clocks in Britain. All were made in Colchester between 1640 and
1840 and give a fascinating insight into this specialist trade.
